## Overview
Assessment steps let you include assessor-driven Forms in your Pathways to capture in-person evaluations and practical assessments. They combine digital learning with real-world assessment, making Pathways more versatile for industries where skills need to be demonstrated, not just read or watched.

## What are assessment steps?
An assessment step is a Form within a Pathway that must be completed by someone other than the learner — usually a Manager, trainer or team lead. This lets you validate practical skills in the workplace, ensure learners are assessed by the right people, add flexibility by letting learners select their own assessor (ideal for shift work), and build a complete training experience in a single Pathway.

## How to add an assessment step
1. Open the Pathway you'd like to add an assessment to, or create a new one.
2. Add a **Form** step as you normally would.
3. Open the step's settings and toggle **To be completed by an assessor** on. When enabled, the Form becomes an assessment step to be completed by an assessor rather than the learner.
4. Choose who can act as the assessor:
   * **Assessor is Manager** — the learner's Manager completes the assessment.
   * **Choose Specific Assessors** — search for and select specific people or a team to act as assessors.
   * Where enabled, the learner can select their own assessor from the available list — useful for flexible environments such as retail or hospitality shifts.
5. Publish the Pathway. The Form now appears as an assessment step.

> **Note:** Assessors must be Owner, Manager, People Manager or Instructor roles. If you select a team, only the people in that team who hold one of those roles will be able to assess the step.

## What learners see
* When they reach the assessment step, learners are prompted to select an assessor (if this is enabled).
* The assessor receives a notification that the Form is ready for completion.
* The assessor fills out and submits the Form on the learner's behalf.

## What assessors see
* Assessors are notified when a learner requests an assessment.
* They can complete and submit the Form directly in SuperPath.
* If approvals are required, these automatically flow to the correct approver.

## Example use cases
* **Hospitality:** A bartender completes online compliance modules, then a Manager assesses their practical skills on shift.
* **Retail:** A sales assistant finishes product training, followed by an in-store demonstration assessed by their supervisor.
* **Apprenticeships:** Learners complete coursework, then demonstrate hands-on competencies validated by a trainer.

## Things to keep in mind
* An assessment step is a Form step with assessor completion switched on — you set it up in the step's settings, not as a separate step type.
* Combine assessment steps with **prerequisites** or **approval flows** for structured and reliable training journeys.

## Who can do this
**Owners**, **Admins**, **Managers**, **Content Managers** and **Instructors** can add assessment steps to a Pathway. Assessors themselves must be **Owner**, **Manager**, **People Manager** or **Instructor** roles. **Employees**, **Members**, **Volunteers** and **Restricted** users have read-only access to Pathways and cannot author assessment steps.
