## Overview
CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points let you quantify the time and quality of learning and development activities, so your learners can track their professional development and meet CPD requirements. You can assign CPD points to Library Learning, Pathways and Events — either as you build them, or by editing existing items. The steps differ slightly for each, and this guide covers all three.

Alongside the points, each item can carry an optional **Category** — *Technical*, *Ethics*, *Conferences and Seminars* and so on — which travels with the points to the learner's CPD record and into reporting.

> **Note:** CPD points are a tenant-level feature. If you don't see the CPD points field, an Owner or Admin needs to enable **CPD Points** under **Settings → Features** first.

## Add CPD points to a Learning
1. Go to your **Library** and click the Learning you want to add CPD points to. (You can also add CPD points to any Learning as you build it.)
2. Click **Edit content**.
3. Scroll down to **CPD Points** and set **Points** — either type the amount or use the **+** and **–** buttons until you have the correct number.
4. Optionally choose a **Category** next to the points.

5. Click **Save changes**.

## Add CPD points to a Pathway
1. Go to **Pathways**.
2. Select the Pathway you want to assign CPD points to.
3. Click the **Settings** (cog) icon.
4. Under **CPD Points**, enter the total **Points** for this Pathway, or use the **+** and **–** buttons to adjust.
5. Optionally choose a **Category** next to the points. It applies to the Pathway's points as a whole.

6. Once you've updated the CPD points, publish your update so the change goes live.

## Add CPD points to an Event
1. Go to **Events**.
2. Click the Event you want to add CPD points to.
3. Scroll down to the person icon and, under **CPD Points**, enter the total **Points** for this Event, or use the **+** and **–** buttons to adjust.
4. Optionally choose a **Category** next to the points.

5. Click **Save** in the unsaved-changes bar at the top of the page to keep your change.

## Choosing a CPD category
The **Category** picker beside the points lists the CPD categories your organisation has set up. It's optional — leave it blank and the points are simply recorded without a category.

There are two ways to create a category on the spot if the one you need doesn't exist yet:

* Click **Add category** above the picker to open a small window and enter a **Display label** plus an optional **Description**.
* Or type the new name straight into the **Category** picker and select it — the category is created and selected in one step.

To manage the whole list — rename, add descriptions, remove categories you no longer use — see *How to Manage CPD Categories*.

## Things to keep in mind
* CPD points must be enabled for your organisation under **Settings → Features** before the field appears on Learning, Pathways or Events.
* Saving differs by item: a **Learning** uses **Save changes**, a **Pathway** needs to be **published** for the change to go live (editing any field un-publishes it until you publish again), and an **Event** stages your change in an unsaved-changes bar until you click **Save**.
* As a rough guide, one hour of learning and development activity equates to roughly one CPD point.
* Each item carries **one** category. Points from a single Learning, Event or Pathway can't be split across two categories.
* Changing the category only affects points earned from then on. Points already earned keep the category they were recorded with.
* When a learner completes a Learning or Event **as a step inside a Pathway**, the points are recorded without a category. The category carries through when the Learning or Event is assigned in its own right, and a Pathway's own category applies to the Pathway's points.

## FAQs
**What are CPD points?**
CPD points are units that quantify the time and quality of learning and development activities. They let learners track their professional development against CPD requirements.

**Can I add CPD points while building new content?**
Yes. You can set CPD points and a category as you build a Learning, Pathway or Event, or add them later by editing an existing item.

**Is the category compulsory?**
No. Leave it blank and the points are recorded without a category, reporting as **Uncategorised**.

**Why can't I see the CPD points field?**
CPD points are a tenant-level feature. An Owner or Admin needs to enable **CPD Points** under **Settings → Features** for the field to appear.

**Why can't I see the Add category button?**
Creating a new CPD category is limited to Owners and Admins. Other roles can still choose from the categories that already exist.

## Who can do this
**Owners**, **Admins**, **Managers**, **Content Managers** and **Instructors** can assign CPD points and choose a category, because doing so means editing a Learning, Pathway or Event — which requires the `manage` permission on `Content`, `Pathway` or `Event`. **People Managers**, **Employees** and **Restricted** users cannot; they have read-only access. Creating a brand-new CPD category from the **Add category** button is limited to **Owners** and **Admins**. Enabling the CPD Points feature itself is done in **Settings → Features** by an Owner or Admin.
