## Overview

Knowledge categories keep your articles organised and easy to navigate. A category can stand on its own or sit under a parent category as a subcategory, and you can give it an icon, an image, and choose whether it appears on your Knowledge Homepage.

## Who can do this

Knowledge categories are managed under **Settings**, which only **Owners** and **Admins** can access. **Managers**, **Content Managers**, **People Managers**, **Instructors**, **Employees** and **Restricted** users cannot reach the category management screen.

## How to create a Knowledge category

1. Go to **Settings → Features → Manage Knowledge Categories**.
2. Click **Add Category**.
3. In the **Name** field, type a name for the category.
4. In the **Description** field, add a short description.
5. To make this a subcategory, use the **Parent** field ("Type to search categories") to find and select an existing category. Leave it blank for a top-level category.
6. Under **Icon**, click **Select Icon** to choose an icon for the category (optional).
7. Under **Image**, search Unsplash for an image or upload your own (optional).
8. To show the category on your Knowledge Homepage, turn on the **Show on Knowledge Homepage** toggle — it turns green when enabled.
9. Click **Add** to save your new category.

## Things to keep in mind

* Selecting a parent turns the new category into a subcategory of it; removing the parent makes it a top-level category again.
* The icon and image are both optional — a category works fine without either.
* Only categories with **Show on Knowledge Homepage** enabled appear on the homepage; others are still available elsewhere in Knowledge.

## FAQs

**What's the difference between a category and a subcategory?**
A subcategory is simply a category that has a parent. Choose a parent in the **Parent** field to nest it; leave the field empty to create a standalone, top-level category.

**Why doesn't my new category show on the homepage?**
Check that the **Show on Knowledge Homepage** toggle was turned on (green) when you created it. You can switch it on at any time by editing the category.
