# How to Add a Competency to a Roadmap

## Overview

A Roadmap is a grid: Levels run across the top as columns, and **Competencies** run down the side as rows. Each Competency is a skill area or theme you want to track across every Level — for example communication, technical delivery or leadership. Adding a Competency gives you a new row to describe how that area develops as someone progresses. This article shows you how to add one.

## How to add a Competency

1. Go to **Roadmaps** and open the Roadmap you want to edit.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the grid and click **Add Competency**.

3. A new row titled **Untitled competency** is added at the bottom of your existing Competencies. Click its title and type a name, then click the description below it to add an optional description.

4. Your changes save automatically as you type. To fill in the detail for a Competency at a particular Level, click the cell where the row and column meet to open that competency level and add skills, behaviours and learnings.

## Things to keep in mind

* A new Competency is always added as the last (bottom) row. Use the reorder arrows to move it into position — see *How to Reorder Competencies in a Roadmap*.
* A new Competency starts empty. The cells along its row are only created once you click into them and start adding detail.
* If the Roadmap was already published, adding a Competency moves it back to **Unpublished**. Re-publish the Roadmap when you're ready for the change to go live.

## FAQs

**Is there a limit to how many Competencies I can add?**
No fixed limit is enforced. The grid scrolls vertically, so you can add as many rows as you need, though a focused set of Competencies keeps a Roadmap easier to follow.

**Do I need to save after adding a Competency?**
No. Titles and descriptions save automatically as you type, and the new Competency itself is saved as soon as you add it.

**Why did my Roadmap change to Unpublished?**
Structural changes such as adding a Competency revert a published Roadmap to Unpublished so your learners don't see a half-finished change. Publish it again once you're happy with it.

## Who can do this

**Owners**, **Admins**, **Managers** and **Content Managers** can add Competencies to a Roadmap. **People Managers**, **Instructors**, **Employees** and **Restricted** users have read-only access to Roadmaps and cannot.
