# How to Add Skills to a Competency Level

## Overview

Each cell in a Roadmap — one competency at one level — can list the skills expected at that point. There are two kinds: **Key skills** and **Technical skills**. Adding them makes it clear what someone at this level of this competency should be able to do, and the skills show up on the cell in the grid.

This article covers the Skills section only. For how to open a cell's settings panel, see *How to Edit a Competency-Level Cell*.

## How to add skills

1. Open the cell's **Competency Level Settings** panel (click the cell in the grid).
2. Click the **Skills** section to expand it.
3. Under **Key skills**, start typing a skill and select it. Repeat to add as many as you need.
4. Do the same under **Technical skills** for the more specialised, role-specific skills.

Skills save automatically as you add or remove them — there is no Save button.

> **Tip:** Use **Key skills** for broad capabilities expected at this level and **Technical skills** for the specialised, hands-on skills specific to the competency.

## Things to keep in mind

* To remove a skill, delete it from its input in the panel — the change saves immediately.
* Editing a cell on a Roadmap that is already **Published** flips the Roadmap back to **Unpublished**. Re-publish it for the change to reach your learners.
* The skills you add appear on the cell in the Roadmap grid under **Key skills** and **Technical skills**.

## FAQs

**What's the difference between key skills and technical skills?**
Key skills are the broad capabilities expected at this level; technical skills are the more specialised, hands-on skills specific to the competency. They're stored and displayed separately.

**Do I need to save after adding a skill?**
No. Skills save automatically the moment you add or remove one.

## Who can do this

**Owners**, **Admins**, **Managers** and **Content Managers** can edit competency-level cells, including skills. **People Managers**, **Instructors**, **Employees** and **Restricted** users cannot edit Roadmaps.
