## Overview
Before you delete or change a content item, Form, Event, Knowledge article or Pathway, it helps to know which Pathways it appears in. The **Add to Pathway** button shows you. Open it on any item and click **View used in** to see every Pathway in your organisation that has the item as a step, then open any of those Pathways in a new tab to update it.

The same window also marks the Pathways that already contain the item, so you don't add it to the same Pathway twice.

## Where to find the Add to Pathway button
The button sits wherever you work with an item:

* **Content:** the **Add to Pathway** button on the content item's page in the **Library**, the same button in the quick view that opens when you click an item in the Library, and the **+** icon in the item's row under **Settings → Library → Manage Private Library**.
* **Forms:** the **+** icon in the top bar of the Form editor. Hover over it to see **Add form to pathways**.
* **Events:** the **+** icon in the top bar of the Event editor. Hover over it to see **Add event to pathways**.
* **Knowledge articles:** the **+** icon in the top bar of the article editor, shown once the article is published. On a mobile device it appears in the **Article Settings** panel instead.
* **Pathways:** the **+** icon in the top bar of the Pathway editor.

## See which Pathways use an item
1. Open the item and click **Add to Pathway** (or the **+** icon).
2. A window opens titled for the item type, for example **Add content to pathway** or **Add form to pathway**. It lists the Pathways you can add the item to.
3. Click **View used in** at the bottom left of the window.
4. The window changes to **Pathways using this content** (or **this form**, **this event** and so on). It lists every Pathway that has the item as a step, sorted by name, with each Pathway's status.
5. Click a Pathway's name to open it in the Pathway editor in a new browser tab. From there you can remove the step, or make any other change you need.
6. Click **Back** to return to the list of Pathways you can add the item to.

If the item isn't part of any Pathway yet, the window shows **This content is not used in any pathway yet.**

### Pathways that already contain the item
In the main list, a Pathway that already contains the item shows a tick instead of a checkbox. Hover over the tick to see **Already in this pathway**. You can't select that Pathway again, so the item is never added twice by mistake.

## Search the list of Pathways
Both lists have a search box, **type to search pathways**, that filters the Pathways by name as you type.

* Pathways you have ticked stay selected while a search hides them, so you can search for several Pathways in turn and then add the item to all of them at once.
* Switching between the two lists, or closing the window, clears the search.
* If no Pathway matches, the list shows **No results found**.

## Things to keep in mind
* **View used in** lists every Pathway in your organisation that uses the item, published or unpublished. The main list of Pathways you can add to depends on your role: **Owners** and **Admins** see every Pathway, while other roles see the Pathways they own or are an editor on. So **View used in** can include a Pathway that doesn't appear in your main list, and that Pathway won't show a tick there.
* **View used in** only looks at Pathway steps. It doesn't show which learners are assigned the item or how far through it they are.
* The list loads each time you open the window. If you've just removed the item from a Pathway, close the window and open it again to see the change.
* When you open the button from the Pathway editor, the Pathway you're editing never appears in its own list, because a Pathway can't be added to itself.

> **Good to know:** Forms and Events can't be deleted while they're a step in a Pathway, but content items and Knowledge articles can. Check **View used in** before you delete content or a Knowledge article, so you can remove it from its Pathways first and avoid leaving learners with a missing step.

## FAQs
**Why don't I see the Add to Pathway button on a Knowledge article?**
The button only appears once the article is published. Draft and unpublished articles don't show it.

**Does View used in show Pathways from other organisations?**
No. It only shows Pathways in your own organisation.

**Will View used in tell me why I can't delete a Pathway?**
No. A Pathway can't be deleted while learners are assigned to it, and **View used in** doesn't show assignments. It shows the Pathways that contain an item as a step. See *How to Delete a Pathway* for removing assignments.

**I removed an item from a Pathway but it still shows in View used in. Why?**
The list is loaded when you open the window. Close it and click **Add to Pathway** again to load the latest list.

## Who can do this
**Owners**, **Admins**, **Managers**, **Content Managers** and **Instructors** can add items to Pathways and see where they're used. **People Managers**, **Employees**, **Members**, **Volunteers** and **Restricted** users have read-only access to Pathways and cannot add items to them.
