Tile to Know: Flashcards

Learn how to create and use Flashcard tiles in AI course builder to build practice and reinforce key concepts.

The Flashcard tile is a simple way to add active recall practice into any course. It lets learners flip between a prompt and its answer, just like a physical deck of cards, and give learners an easy way to review key terms, definitions, or concepts.

Use flashcards to help learners reinforce knowledge, prepare for assessments, or build fluency with new material.

Adding flashcards to a course

You can add multiple flashcards in a single tile. Each flashcard includes a front and a back:

  • The front typically contains a term, prompt, or question
  • The back contains the definition, answer, or explanation

Three ways to build flashcards

  1. Manually

Add cards one by one if you already have a set of terms and definitions. This is useful for predefined study lists or existing course materials.

  1. With the AI Generator (tile only)

Use the Assistant to generate flashcards for a single tile.

Example prompt: “Create flashcards with 10 beginner-level terms for navigating Microsoft Excel.”

The Assistant will return a ready-to-use set of cards you can edit before publishing.

  1. With the AI Generator (full page)

Ask the Assistant to create an entire course page that includes a flashcard tile, along with surrounding text or context. This is useful when you want flashcards embedded within a larger explanation.

Placement options

  • As a standalone page: Great for review sections or practice checkpoints.
  • Embedded within a page: Combine flashcards with other content types to add variety. If you embed, consider adding a short text block before the flashcards to explain what learners should do with them.

Learner experience

Flashcards work just like their real-world counterparts: learners flip the card to reveal the answer and can repeat as needed.

Tips for instructional designers

  • Use flashcards for spaced repetition of key terms
  • Keep the text concise so learners can scan quickly
  • Pair flashcards with quizzes to reinforce memory and then test recall
  • When embedding in a page, introduce the card set with a short sentence like: “Use these flashcards to practice the key formulas you’ll need in Excel.”
