## Overview
Roadmaps are living documents — job expectations shift, competencies get sharper, and the learning you attach to a Level gets better over time. This article is the overview of updating an existing Roadmap: how the editor is laid out, what you can change and where, and the one thing to remember afterwards — re-publishing so your changes reach the people already assigned.

## How the Roadmap editor is laid out
Open a Roadmap and you get a grid. **Levels are the columns**, running left to right in progression order. **Competencies are the rows**. Where a competency meets a Level is a **cell**, and the cell is where the detail lives: a description, the skills expected, the behaviours to demonstrate, any attached learning and internal notes.

Everything in the editor saves automatically. Titles and descriptions save a moment after you stop typing; everything else saves the instant you change it. There is no Save button anywhere in the Roadmap editor.

## How to update a Roadmap
1. Go to **Roadmaps** and click the Roadmap you want to change.
2. Edit the grid directly — click a Level title or description, a Competency title or description, and type over it.
3. To change the detail behind a cell, click the cell. The **Competency Level Settings** panel opens on the right with the cell's description, **Skills**, **Behaviours**, **Learnings** and **Notes** sections.

4. When you have finished, click the status button in the top-right of the editor and select **Publish** to push your changes live.

## Where each part of a Roadmap is edited
Each individual change has its own short how-to:

* **Levels** — add, rename, reorder or remove a column: *How to Add a Level to a Roadmap*, *How to Reorder Levels in a Roadmap*, *How to Delete a Level From a Roadmap*.
* **Competencies** — add, rename, reorder or remove a row: *How to Add a Competency to a Roadmap*, *How to Reorder Competencies in a Roadmap*, *How to Delete a Competency From a Roadmap*.
* **Cell detail** — the description, skills, behaviours, learning and notes for one competency at one Level: *How to Edit a Competency-Level Cell*, *How to Add Skills to a Competency Level*, *How to Add Behaviours to a Competency Level*, *How to Auto-Assign Learning at a Competency Level*, *How to Add Notes to a Competency Level*.
* **Roadmap details** — the title, sub title, description, department, rating scale and tags: *How to Edit Roadmap Details and Settings*, *How to Set the Rating Scale for a Roadmap*, *How to Add Tags to a Roadmap*.
* **Cover image** — *How to Set a Roadmap Cover Image*.
* **Collaborators** — who else can edit the Roadmap: *How to Add Collaborators to a Roadmap*.
* **Publishing** — *How to Publish a Roadmap*.

## Re-publishing after your changes
Changing a Roadmap's Levels or Competencies automatically flips a live Roadmap back to **Unpublished**, and SuperPath shows a notice explaining that your changes will not reflect on active Roadmap assignments until you re-publish. So the final step of any update is to click the status button and select **Publish** again — that propagates your changes to active assignments and lets you carry on assigning the Roadmap.

Editing the Roadmap's details fields — title, description, department, tags and so on — does not unpublish it.

> **Tip:** You can tick **Don't show this again** on the unpublished notice if you would rather not see it every time you edit.

## Things to keep in mind
* **Re-publish when you are done.** Until you do, the Roadmap cannot be assigned to anyone new and your edits do not reach people already on it.
* There is no Save button — everything saves as you go, which also means there is no way to discard a change once made.
* Deleting a Level, a Competency or a cell removes everything stored against it and cannot be undone.
* The Roadmap editor is a desktop and tablet experience. On mobile, SuperPath shows a notice asking you to switch device to make or update a Roadmap.
* **Managers** and **Content Managers** only see the Roadmaps they own or have been added to as a collaborator.
* Levels were previously called "roles" in SuperPath. If you come across "role" in an older article, read it as "Level".

## FAQs
**Do I need to save my changes?**
No. The editor saves automatically — text fields shortly after you stop typing, and everything else immediately.

**Why did my Roadmap become unpublished when I edited it?**
Changing Levels or Competencies on a published Roadmap unpublishes it so you can review before your people see the change. Publish it again when you are ready.

**Will my changes reach people already assigned to the Roadmap?**
Only once you re-publish. Until then, active assignments keep the version they were given.

**Can I undo a change?**
No. There is no version history or undo in the Roadmap editor, so take care when deleting Levels, Competencies or cells.

**Where do I change the Roadmap's title or tags?**
In the settings panel — click the cog icon in the editor's top nav. See *How to Edit Roadmap Details and Settings*.

## Who can do this
**Owners**, **Admins**, **Managers** and **Content Managers** can update Roadmaps — they hold the manage permission on the Roadmap subject and can reach the Roadmaps area. **People Managers** can only read Roadmaps, and **Instructors**, **Employees** and **Restricted** users have no Roadmap edit permission, so none of those roles can update a Roadmap. Roadmaps must also be switched on for your organisation.
