Overview

Attaching learning to a Roadmap turns it from a description of what "good" looks like into a development plan. You attach learning to a single cell of the grid — one Competency at one Level — so the Pathway, course, Event, Form or Knowledge article sits alongside the behaviours it supports. You can then switch on Auto Assign so that learning is assigned automatically to anyone who is assigned that Level.

How to attach learning to a Competency at a Level

1. Go to Roadmaps and click the Roadmap you want to update.
2. In the grid, click the cell where the Competency (row) meets the Level (column) you want to add learning to. The Competency Level Settings panel opens on the right.
3. Click the Learnings section heading to expand it, then click Add Learning.

4. In the Add Learning to Competency Level window, click Select learning type and choose Content, Event, Knowledge, Pathway or Form.
5. Choose the item. For Content, click the Search content from library box, type a search term and click the item in the results. For the other types, pick the item from the Select a … list.
6. Click Add Learning to confirm.

7. The item now appears in the Learnings section of the panel and on the cell in the Roadmap grid. Repeat for as many items as you need, then repeat for each Competency and Level that needs learning.
8. To have the learning assigned automatically, switch on Auto Assign at the top of the Learnings section.

Your changes save as soon as you make them — there is no save button in the panel. To remove an item, click the trash icon beside it and confirm.

How the learning reaches your people

Attaching learning to a cell puts it on the Roadmap for reference. It is only assigned to a person if Auto Assign is on for that cell, in which case it is assigned at the moment they are assigned that Level of the Roadmap:

• Pathways are assigned as a Pathway.
• Content, Events and Forms are assigned as an assignment.
• Knowledge is skipped, because Knowledge articles cannot be assigned — they stay on the cell as a reference.

Things to keep in mind

• Learning is attached per cell — one Competency at one Level — not to an individual behaviour. The learning you add sits alongside all of the behaviours in that cell.
• With Auto Assign off, the learning is still shown on the Roadmap but nothing is assigned to anyone.
• Auto-assign only fires when someone is assigned the Level. It does not retrospectively assign learning to people already sitting on that Level.
• Editing a cell on a published Roadmap sets the Roadmap back to Unpublished. Click the Unpublished button in the top right of the editor and select Publish so the change reaches active Roadmap assignments — see How to Publish a Roadmap.
• The Roadmap editor is available on desktop or tablet, not on mobile.

FAQs

Can I attach learning to a single behaviour?
No. Learning is attached to the cell — the Competency at that Level — which is the same place the behaviours for that combination live.

Which types of learning can I attach?
Content (including courses), Events, Knowledge articles, Pathways and Forms.

Why hasn't the learning appeared for my learners?
Check that Auto Assign is on for the cell and that the person has been assigned that Level of the Roadmap. Knowledge articles are never auto-assigned.

How do I remove a piece of learning?
Click the trash icon next to it in the Learnings list and confirm — this removes it from the Roadmap cell only, not from your Library.

Who can do this

Owners, Admins, Managers and Content Managers can attach learning to a Roadmap cell and switch on Auto Assign. People Managers, Instructors, Employees and Restricted users cannot — the admin Roadmaps area is limited to the roles that can create or update Roadmaps.
