How to Add a Required Pass Score to Courses (AI Course + SCORM only)

Overview

Required Pass Score lets you tell learners, up front, the minimum score they need to pass a course — for example 80%. Once it's set, SuperPath shows that requirement on the course and inside the learning itself, so nobody starts a course without knowing what they're aiming for.

Note: The pass score is enforced. SuperPath compares the score the course reports against the figure you set here, and a learner who falls short doesn't earn the certificate, badge or CPD points for that course. It does not block them from finishing the course — see What happens if a learner doesn't reach the pass score below.

The field is only available on AI Course and SCORM content, because those are the content types that report a score back to SuperPath.

How to add a required pass score

1. In the left-hand menu, go to Library and find the course you want to change.

2. Open the course, then click the Edit content icon (the pencil) in the icon panel on the right of the page.

3. Scroll to Required Pass Score and switch it on. It starts at 80% — adjust the percentage to whatever the course requires (any whole number from 0 to 100).

4. Click Save changes. The course now shows a target icon with the percentage next to it, confirming that a minimum pass score of (for example) 80% applies.

Tip: When you upload a SCORM package for the first time, Required Pass Score is available in the upload form too — so you can set it as you add the course rather than editing it afterwards. AI Courses start with no pass score, so for those you set it by editing the course as above.

Where learners see it

Once a required pass score is set, learners see it in a few places:

• On the course in the Library, as a target icon with the percentage beside it — hovering shows "This course requires a minimum score of 80% to pass".
• On the course's details panel, as a Required Pass Score value.
• When they open the course as an Assignment or a Pathway step, as a note above the course reminding them of the minimum score. This note disappears once they've completed the course.

What happens if a learner doesn't reach the pass score

A learner who finishes the course but scores below your pass mark still completes it. Their completion, their score and the time they spent are all recorded as normal — the record stays accurate whatever the outcome.

What they don't get is the reward:

• No certificate. The course's certificate isn't awarded, and if they try to download one they're told they haven't passed.
• No badge.
• No CPD points.
• Nothing sent to your HR system. If you sync completions to an HR system (Employment Hero, HiBob, BambooHR, Deputy or foundU), a failed course isn't reported there as completed training.

For Pathways, the rule carries upwards: if a Pathway contains a scored course the learner didn't pass, the Pathway's certificate is withheld too, and the Pathway isn't reported to your HR system. That applies to scored courses inside nested sub-Pathways as well.

If the learner retakes the course and passes, they earn everything as normal from that point.

Good to know: This only affects learning that has a pass mark. Courses and other content without a Required Pass Score award certificates, badges and CPD points exactly as before.

Things to keep in mind

• Required Pass Score only appears for AI Course and SCORM content. Other content types — articles, videos, documents, podcasts, books, Forms and Events — don't have this field.
• SuperPath compares the score the course reports against the figure you set here, so the pass mark is applied whatever the course itself does with it.
• The score is read as a percentage, so a package that scores out of 10 and reports 8 is treated as 80%. It's kept to two decimal places, which means a 79.5% doesn't creep past an 80% pass mark.
• Switching the toggle on sets 80% by default. Change the number before saving if that isn't your pass mark.
• Switching the toggle off removes the pass score entirely, and the target icon and learner-facing note disappear.
• If the course was purchased and copied into other accounts, updating the pass score on the original also updates those copies.

FAQs

Does a required pass score stop a learner from completing the course?
No — they can still finish it, and their completion and score are recorded. What they don't get is the certificate, badge or CPD points, and the completion isn't sent to your HR system as passed training.

A learner passed but didn't get their certificate. Why?
Check the score against the pass mark: certificates are withheld below it. If the course sits in a Pathway, also check the other scored courses in that Pathway — one failed scored course withholds the Pathway certificate as well, including scored courses inside nested sub-Pathways.

Can I award a certificate to someone who didn't reach the pass mark?
Not automatically. You'd either lower the pass mark, ask them to retake the course, or add the certificate to them manually.

Why can't I see the Required Pass Score field on my content?
The field only shows for AI Course and SCORM content. If you're editing an article, video, document, podcast, book, Form or Event, it won't be there.

What percentage should I use?
Whatever the course itself requires to pass. SuperPath accepts any whole number between 0 and 100, and defaults to 80 when you first switch the toggle on.

Can I set it while uploading a SCORM course?
Yes — the field is part of the SCORM upload form, so you can set it as you add the course.

Who can do this

Owners, Admins, Managers, Content Managers and Instructors can edit Library content, so they can set a required pass score. People Managers, Employees and Restricted users have read-only access to content and won't see the Edit content icon at all.
