Overview
An Open text answer question lets learners respond in their own words, so you can capture detailed, free-form answers that give you deep and rich insight into their thinking and understanding. It's one of the question types you can pick when building a Form or quiz.
Add an Open text question
- Open the Form you want to edit — you'll land in the question builder in edit mode.
- Click Add question at the bottom of the builder to add a new question.
- With the new question selected, open the question type dropdown to the right of the question title and choose Open text answer.
- Type your question in the question field.
- (Optional) Turn on Show model answer and enter a Model answer — the expected or ideal response. This is shown to learners only once the Form is submitted.
- Use the Required toggle if learners must answer this question. Your changes save automatically as you work.
Good to know: A model answer is for guidance only — it's revealed after submission and doesn't affect a Form's score.
Things to keep in mind
- Open text questions are recorded as written responses and aren't auto-marked, so they don't count towards a Form's pass score.
- A model answer is optional and, when set, is shown to the learner only after they submit.
- Changes to a Form save automatically as you work — there's no separate save button.

Who can do this
Owners, Admins, Managers, Content Managers and Instructors can add and edit Form questions. People Managers, Employees and Restricted users have read-only access and cannot change a Form's questions.
