How to Require a Passing Score to Progress Past a Quiz

Overview

When you set a pass percentage on a Form, it becomes a graded quiz: SuperPath scores the learner's answers and tells them whether they passed. You can also decide whether learners get more than one attempt. This article explains how to set the pass mark, control retries, and what happens to a learner who doesn't pass — including inside a Learning Pathway.

How to set a pass percentage

1. Open your form in the builder and click the Settings cog next to the form title to open the Form settings panel.
2. Turn on the Pass percentage (%) toggle. The helper text reads "Learners must achieve this score to pass".
3. Enter the percentage a learner must reach to pass (0–100).

That's it — the form is now a graded quiz. The learner's score is calculated as the number of correct required questions divided by the total number of graded questions, rounded to a whole percentage.

Note: A form is only graded when its Pass percentage is greater than 0. Turning the toggle off sets the pass percentage back to 0 and the form stops being scored. You also need at least one Required multiple-choice or checkbox question with a correct answer marked — see How to Build a Quiz and Set the Correct Answers.

How to allow retries and limit attempts

In the same Form settings panel:

1. Turn on Allow Retries to let learners attempt the quiz more than once.
2. Set No. allowed attempts to the maximum number of tries (between 1 and 999).

If Allow Retries is off, learners get a single attempt. When a form with no retries sits inside a Pathway, learners see the warning "You can only submit your answers once, no retries." before they submit.

What happens when a learner fails

When a learner submits, SuperPath scores the graded questions and compares the score to your pass percentage:

• Score at or above the pass mark — the learner passes. They see "You passed with a score of {score}%" and the item is marked complete.
• Score below the pass mark, with attempts remaining — the learner does not pass. They see "You did not pass. Your score: {score}%." and the item stays in progress so they can retry. The retry area shows "{count} of {max} attempts" and a Retry button.
• Score below the pass mark on the final allowed attempt — the learner sees the same fail message, the retry option shows "Maximum attempts reached", and the item is marked complete as failed (recorded with a fail result rather than blocking them forever).

So a failing learner is held on the quiz and asked to retry until they either pass or use up their attempts.

How this gates progression in a Pathway

When a graded form is a step in a Learning Pathway, the learner must submit it to move on — the Pathway navigation shows Submit form to continue rather than a Next button while the step is incomplete.

Because a failed graded form stays in progress until the learner passes or runs out of attempts, they cannot progress past the step by failing it while attempts remain — they are kept on the step and prompted to retry. Once the step reaches a completed state (either passed, or failed on the final attempt), progression to the next step is allowed.

Good to know: The graded-Form pass percentage is a different setting from the Required Pass Score on SCORM and AI courses (set on the course's content, not in Form settings). This article covers Forms and quizzes only.

Things to keep in mind

• Scoring and the pass/fail result are based only on Required multiple-choice and checkbox questions that have a correct answer marked. Ungraded question types (open text, file upload, rating, date, time) don't affect the score.
• If you set Pass percentage to 0 (or leave it off), the form is treated as ungraded and every submission is recorded as complete with no score.
• While retries are switched on, learners are not shown which answers were correct between attempts.
• Failing does not permanently lock a learner out of a Pathway: once their attempts are exhausted, the step completes with a recorded fail.

FAQs

Does failing a quiz stop a learner completing a Pathway?
While attempts remain, yes — a failed graded form stays in progress and the learner must retry before the step will complete and let them continue. Once attempts are used up, the step completes as a fail and they can move on.

How is the score calculated?
It's the percentage of graded (required, correct-answer-marked) questions the learner got right, rounded to a whole number. The learner passes if that percentage is equal to or above your pass percentage.

Can I give learners unlimited attempts?
Not unlimited, but you can allow up to 999 attempts via Allow Retries and No. allowed attempts.

Is this the same as the pass score on a SCORM or AI course?
No. Those use a separate Required Pass Score field on the course content. The pass percentage described here applies to Forms and quizzes.

Who can do this

Owners, Admins, Managers, Content Managers and Instructors can open a form's settings and set the pass percentage, retries and attempts (they hold create/manage permission on Forms). People Managers, Employees and Restricted users have read-only access to Forms and cannot change these settings.
