Overview

Custom Notifications let you send your own tailored messages from SuperPath, triggered automatically by events in a Workflow. Rather than relying only on the standard system notifications, you can decide what's said, who receives it, and when it's sent.

Common uses include welcoming new starters, alerting a manager when someone joins their team, notifying your HR team of new arrivals, and congratulating learners when they complete a roadmap.

Before you start: account and user notification settings

SuperPath sends a range of standard notifications automatically, such as welcome, assignment, reminder and scheduled emails. These can be managed from your main settings area, both at the account level and at the individual user level. Custom Notifications sit alongside these and are created separately through Workflows.

How to create a custom notification

  1. Go to Settings, then Workflows.
  2. Select Create new workflow (or open an existing workflow you want to add to).
  3. Choose your trigger, for example when a person joins, when a person joins a specific team, or when a person completes a roadmap.
  4. Add the new Send Notification action.
  5. Enter a Title. This becomes the subject of the email or the title of the notification.
  6. Write your Message in the body. You can add variables, images, links and buttons (covered below).
  7. Save your workflow.

Once the workflow is active, the notification is sent automatically every time the trigger occurs.

Choosing who gets notified

When you set up the Send Notification action, you decide who receives it. Your options include:

  • The triggering user, the person who set off the workflow (for example, the person who joined or completed something).
  • Their manager, useful for keeping managers informed of their team's activity.
  • Specific individuals, chosen from your organisation.
  • Teams, for example your HR or compliance team.

You can combine recipients in a single notification. For instance, when a new person joins you might welcome the user, notify their manager, and alert your HR team, all at once

Personalising your message with variables

Variables pull live information into your message so it reads as though it was written for each recipient. To use one, insert the variable where you want the detail to appear.

Available variables include:

  • Recipient name, the name of the person receiving the notification.
  • Triggering person, the person who set off the workflow.
  • Platform name, the name of your SuperPath platform.
  • Triggering entity, the relevant learning or roadmap (available when your trigger relates to a learning or roadmap).

For example, a welcome message might read "Welcome [Recipient name] to [Platform name]." A completion message might read "Congratulations on completing [Triggering entity]."

You can style your notification so it reflects your brand and gives recipients a clear next step. In the message editor you can:

  • Add images to the body of the message.
  • Add links to relevant places inside or outside your platform.
  • Add a button, which appears as a branded call-to-action in the message (for example "View the library").

Testing your notification

Before your notification goes live, select Send a test to me. SuperPath sends the notification to you so you can review the wording, check that variables resolve correctly, and confirm the styling looks right.

Things to keep in mind

  • Custom Notifications are created and managed within Workflows, separately from the standard account-level and user-level notification settings.
  • The recipient options and available variables depend on the trigger you choose. Triggers tied to a learning or roadmap make the Triggering entity variable available.
  • We recommend sending notifications to a team rather than naming individuals where possible. When you use a team, you can add and remove members over time without editing each workflow.
  • Always send a test to yourself before activating a workflow, so you can confirm variables and styling before recipients see the message.

FAQ — Custom Notifications via Workflows

What are Custom Notifications?

They're your own tailored messages, sent automatically from SuperPath when a specific event happens. You set them up using the new Send Notification action inside Workflows, choosing what's said, who receives it, and when.

How are they different from the notifications SuperPath already sends?

SuperPath sends standard system notifications out of the box, such as welcome, assignment, reminder and scheduled emails. Custom Notifications sit alongside those and are written entirely by you, triggered by the events you choose in a workflow.

Where do I set them up?

Go to Settings, then Workflows. Create a new workflow (or open an existing one), choose a trigger, and add the Send Notification action.

What can trigger a custom notification?

Examples include when a person joins, when a person joins a specific team, and when a person completes a roadmap. The trigger you choose also affects which recipients and variables are available.

Who can I send a notification to?

You can send to the triggering user, their manager, specific individuals, or entire teams such as your HR or compliance team. You can combine these in a single notification.

Can I send to more than one recipient at once?

Yes. For example, when a new person joins you could welcome them, notify their manager, and alert your HR team, all from the one workflow.

Can I personalise the message?

Yes. Use variables like Recipient name, Triggering person, Platform name and Triggering entity, and SuperPath fills in the live details automatically. For example, "Welcome [Recipient name] to [Platform name]."

Can I add images, links or buttons?

Yes. The message editor lets you add images, links and a branded button, so the notification reflects your brand and gives recipients a clear next step.

Can I check a notification before it goes out?

Yes. Select Send a test to me and the notification lands in your own inbox so you can review the wording, variables and styling first.

Do Custom Notifications replace the standard SuperPath emails?

No. They're an addition. Your existing account-level and user-level notification settings continue to work as they do today.
