Overview

Skills are earned automatically as people learn. When a learner completes a piece of learning that has skills attached, SuperPath records those skills against them — no manual step is needed. This is how a person's skills profile builds up over time as they work through content, Pathways and Events.

How earning a skill works

The key is the Skills learnt field on your learning. If an item has skills attached and a learner completes it, SuperPath adds each of those skills to the learner:

• Complete a piece of Library content that has skills attached — the learner earns those skills.
• Complete an Event that has skills attached — the learner earns those skills.
• Complete a Pathway or a step within it that leads to learning with skills attached — the learner earns those skills.
• Complete a Roadmap competency level that has skills attached — the learner earns those skills.

If a skill carries a proficiency level, the learner earns it at the level that was attached to the learning.

Things to keep in mind

• Skills are earned on completion — starting or being assigned a learning does not record the skill.
• Earning happens automatically in the background once the completion is recorded; there is no button for the learner to press.
• If a learner earns the same skill from more than one learning, SuperPath keeps a count rather than listing duplicates — so you can see how many times a skill has been reinforced.
• Attaching a skill to a learning only affects completions from that point on; it does not retroactively grant the skill to people who completed the item earlier.

FAQs

Does the learner have to do anything to claim a skill?
No. As soon as their completion is recorded, SuperPath adds the attached skills to their profile automatically.

What if the same skill is on several learnings I complete?
You keep the skill once, and SuperPath increases the count each time you earn it again, so it reflects how often it's been reinforced.

Can a skill be added without completing a learning?
Yes — an Owner or Admin can add a skill to a person directly from their profile. See "How to Add a Skill to a Person".

Who can do this

Earning skills happens automatically for any learner who completes learning that has skills attached — no special role is required. Deciding which skills are attached to learning is done by the people who manage that content (see "How to Attach Skills to Learning Content").
