Overview

As a Manager, Admin or Owner you can assess a team member against their current Roadmap level — giving them a rating on the roadmap's rating scale and writing an evaluation of their progress. This is separate from the learner's own self-assessment: both can sit on the same level, so the learner's view and yours are captured side by side.

How to assess a team member

  1. Open the team member's Roadmap. You'll see a banner at the top confirming whose Roadmap you're viewing, and you need to be on their current level.
  2. Click Submit Assessment in the top-right of the level's title row.
  3. In the Submit Assessment dialog, answer What is your evaluation? in the text box — describe how the person is tracking against this level.
  4. Choose a Rating from the dropdown. The numbers run from 0 up to the rating scale configured on the Roadmap (10 by default).
  5. Click Submit Assessment to save.

Note: When you're viewing someone else's Roadmap the button reads Submit Assessment; on your own it reads Submit Self-assessment. They save to the same Assessments list but are labelled differently.

Where your assessment appears

Your assessment shows in the Assessments section of the level page, tagged with your name and "Submitted assessment", alongside the learner's own self-assessment and any assessments from other Managers or Admins.

Things to keep in mind

  • You can only assess a person against their current roadmap level — completed or not-yet-reached levels can't be assessed.
  • Once the level is marked complete, the Submit button disappears and no further assessments can be added.
  • To assess someone, you first need to be able to view their Roadmap. Managers and People Managers can view (and assess) their direct reports, people reporting further down their line up to five levels, and — where your organisation manages Managers through Teams — members of the Teams they manage. Admins and Owners can view everyone.
  • Your assessment is recorded as a manager or admin assessment (based on your role), which keeps it distinct from the learner's self-assessment.

FAQs

How is this different from a self-assessment?
A self-assessment is submitted by the learner about themselves. An assessment is what you submit about them. Both can exist on the same level and are shown as separate entries.

Can I assess anyone in the organisation?
Only people whose Roadmap you're allowed to view. Managers and People Managers are limited to their reporting line and any Teams they manage; Admins and Owners can assess anyone.

Is the rating required?
No — you can submit an evaluation without a rating.

Can I change an assessment after submitting it?
Yes, while the level is still in progress. See How to Edit or Delete a Roadmap Assessment.

Who can do this

The Submit Assessment button appears for anyone who can open another person's current, in-progress Roadmap level. In practice that means Owners and Admins (who can view everyone), and Managers and People Managers for their direct reports, their wider reporting line (up to five levels), and members of any Teams they manage. Every role is permitted by the API to create roadmap assessments, so the real limit is whose Roadmap you can see. The button is hidden once the level is completed.
