Overview
Muting lets you stay subscribed to a discussion — it stays under your Following tab — while turning off its notifications. It's handy for a busy thread you want to keep on your list but don't need pinging you about every reply.

How to mute a discussion
- Open a discussion you are already following.
- In the header, click the bell icon next to the Following button.
You'll see a Discussion muted confirmation, and notifications for the discussion stop. It still appears under your Following tab.
Note: The mute control only appears once you are following the discussion. If you don't see it, follow the discussion first — see the article on following a discussion.
How to unmute
- Open the muted discussion.
- Click the bell icon again to turn muting off.
You'll see a Discussion unmuted confirmation, and notifications resume.
Things to keep in mind
- Muting requires you to be following the discussion — the control is hidden otherwise.
- If you unfollow a discussion, its mute state is cleared automatically. Following it again starts fresh with notifications on.
- You can't change mute state on an archived discussion, as it is read-only.
- Muting affects only your own notifications; it doesn't change anything for other followers.
FAQs
What's the difference between muting and unfollowing?
Muting keeps the discussion on your Following tab but silences its notifications. Unfollowing removes it from your list entirely (and clears any mute you had set).
Will I still see new comments if I mute?
Yes — the discussion stays fully readable and it remains under Following. You just won't be notified about new activity.
Does muting hide the discussion from me?
No. Muting only affects notifications, not visibility.
Who can do this
Anyone who is following a discussion can mute or unmute it — Owners, Admins, Managers, Content Managers, People Managers, Instructors, Employees and Restricted users. There is no role restriction; the only requirement is that you're following the discussion.
