Overview

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points are units that quantify the time and quality of learning and development activities. In most cases one hour of L&D roughly equates to one CPD point.

Adding CPD points to an Event lets your learners track the professional development they earn by attending. You can also classify those points with an optional CPD category, so attendance at a conference or seminar reports separately from other kinds of learning.

Adding CPD points to an Event

  1. Go to Events in the left-hand menu and open the Event you want to update.
  2. Find the CPD Points section, marked with its own icon, and enter the number of Points this Event is worth.
  3. Optionally choose a Category beside the points.

  1. Click Save in the unsaved-changes bar at the top of the page to store your changes.

Once saved, the Event shows its points and — where you set one — the category in brackets beside them.

Choosing a CPD category

The Category picker sits next to Points and lists the CPD categories your organisation has set up. It's optional: leave it blank and the points are recorded without a category.

If the category you need doesn't exist yet, click Add category above the picker to create one with a Display label and an optional Description, or type the new name straight into the Category picker and select it.

When an attendee's Event learning is completed, the category is recorded against the points they earn, so it appears on their CPD tab, on their transcript and in the CPD Points Report. To manage the full list, see How to Manage CPD Categories.

Things to keep in mind

Note: The CPD Points section only appears if CPD points are enabled for your organisation. If you can't see it, ask an Owner or Admin to enable them in your settings.

  • You can enter points in increments of 0.1, up to a maximum of 2000.
  • CPD points are shown to learners on the Event once set.
  • An Event carries one category — its points can't be split across two.
  • Changing the category later only affects points earned from then on. Points already earned keep the category they were recorded with.
  • If the Event is completed as a step inside a Pathway, the points are recorded without a category. The category carries through when the Event is assigned in its own right.
  • Duplicating an Event carries its CPD points and category across to the copy.

FAQs

How many CPD points should an event be worth?
As a rule of thumb, one hour of learning and development roughly equates to one CPD point — but set the value that matches your organisation's CPD policy.

Can I use decimal values?
Yes. Points can be entered in steps of 0.1, so a 90-minute session could be set to 1.5.

Do I have to set a category?
No. It's optional, and points without one report as Uncategorised.

I can't see the CPD Points field — why?
CPD points need to be enabled for your organisation. Once enabled, the field appears in the Event editor.

Why can't I see the Add category button?
Creating a new CPD category is limited to Owners and Admins. Other roles can still pick from the categories that already exist.

Who can do this

Owners, Admins, Managers, Content Managers and Instructors can edit Events, set CPD points and choose a category. People Managers, Employees and Restricted users have read-only access to Events and cannot. Creating a brand-new CPD category from the Add category button is limited to Owners and Admins. The CPD Points section is also only shown when CPD points are enabled for your organisation.
